It’s winter. In WV this is the most intense winter we’ve had in awhile. Plus, other areas of the south have received SNOW as far as Florida. So, it’s time to review some winter skin care myths and tips.
Myth #1 You don’t need sunscreen in winter.
Ask any dermatologist and they will tell you to wear sunscreen EVERY SINGLE DAY. All year round. Those UV rays may be less intense on cloudy days, but they are still there. Plus, with all of the snow and ice, there is lots of reflection bouncing those UV rays all around. In addition to UV rays, the skin can also be damaged by blue rays from our devices. Myth #2 You need to avoid warm showers in winter.
This is one I personally cannot tolerate. I love a long, HOT shower. Especially when I’m trying to shake a winter chill. In the olden days, dermatologists thought that warm water would “strip” the skin of its natural oils. In fact you will still see a lot of “experts” recommending avoiding hot showers. It’s 2025! And we should be much smarter than that now. If you look at the scientific literature, there is very little evidence showing the impact of water temperature on the skin. The skin barrier is very complex and can tolerate any temperature water. Still worried about drying out your skin? Follow that shower with a good moisturizer since ingredients are absorbed better when the skin is warm and wet.
Myth #3 It’s OK to ignore your feet in winter.
Many people ignore their feet in the winter. This leads to super dry, cracked skin on the feet and toenails that are growing longer and brittle. Here’s a few winter tips for the feet. Use a exfoliating urea cream on the feet to help with dryness. Remove polish or replace at regular intervals. Check those toe web spaces and treat for fungus if found. Hang in there! My favorite season of SPRING is coming soon. In the meantime, sunscreen up!
