Disclaimer! This article has absolutely nothing to do with dermatology. It’s Christmas time! So I thought I’d lighten up a little and highlight some fun Christmas activities that you may or may not know about for the month of December. Second Disclaimer! Many of these activities are hosted by or at a church or other civic group. But its is Christmas for heaven’s sake.
Journey to Bethlehem (12/1, 12/2 and 12/3 from 6-9PM) This is a drive through experience hosted by Trinity Assembly of God. At Journey to Bethlehem, you drive through scenes of the Christmas story being acted out by live actors. There is some limited (fun) interaction with the cast if you choose to roll down your window. While driving through you listen to a narration. There is a narration targeted both towards adults and kids. FREE
Jingle Jam. (12/1 at 6PM) This is a fun, silly, yet meaningful event for the whole family at South Ridge Church. This event is held in the church sanctuary and you watch a fun production on stage that is aimed toward kids but is fun for the whole family. FREE
Celebration of Lights (Whole month of December). This is a Fairmont Christmas tradition that continues to grow each year. It is held at Morris Park. You drive though and look at hundreds of light displays. Many are donated in memory of loved ones who have passed. For the more energetic, they have walker nights on Wednesday. This is our favorite way to enjoy the lights because you can really take your time and get some exercise on this hilly one mile loop. This is a major fundraiser for our local United Way. $10 per car. $5 per walker. Celebrationoflightswv.com
Reindeer Run 5K (December 12 6-8PM). This is held in Morris Park at the location of the Celebration of Lights. $30 fee includes a T shirt and a medal.
Feast of the Seven Fishes. (December 8 and 9) When this festival first start many years back in Fairmont many years back, I was Iike “Seven Fishes”? Fairmont residents have a strong Italian heritage. I quickly learned that seafood with “seven fishes” is the traditional meal for Christmas Eve in the local Italian tradition. This is a street fair held downtown during the daytime hours. There are lots of local vendors and in addition to fish, lots of great things to eat and stock up on for unique Christmas presents. FREE
Fairmont Christmas Parade. (December 9th at 5PM). Join local bands and organizations as we celebrate the holiday season. FREE
Light up Night in Bridgeport (November 30th at 5PM) Yes, I know I said this is a Fairmont list, but Bridgeport isn’t far and this is traditionally a really nice event. Located on Main Street Bridgeport, it is a street fair with lots of vendors and businesses giving away lots of things. Local school students sing songs, bands play and the evening is capped off with a nice presentation and firework display at the Benedum Center. FREE
That’s just a few of the fun and mostly free or for a good cause things in and around Fairmont. I’m sure there are many more. If you know of a great event, share it with us on our Facebook page @wvderm. We hope your enjoy your holiday with friends and loved ones!
