The One Muscle You DO NOT Want to Exercise!
One thing you learn quickly as a dermatology resident is that most things have a name that is difficult to say and spell – Pronounced /pləˈtizmə/. The Platysma, also know as the Platysmus, is a thin muscle that drapes along the front and sides of the neck. We focus on it in dermatology because overuse causes unattractive bands to form in the neck, contributing to a less desirous jawline and often to the appearance of a double chin.
Should I do facial exercise to strengthen the platysma? NO. From an aesthetic standpoint, we want things to look smooth. Some of the worst wrinkles and large muscle bands I see are in those who have been ill-advised to do facial exercises. I was advised to do them as a child to help with my double chin. UGH! Now, I know those chin exercises actually made it WORSE!
When do I naturally use the platysma? Most commonly, it is used in chewing and straining movements. Avoid chewing gum, straining, and allowing your neck to do the work during abdominal exercises. Try to avoid engaging the platysma during these activities.
How much BOTOX does it take to relax the platysma? We usually start with about four units in each band but varies that depending on the number and the thickness of the bands.
The next time you look in the mirror, check out your platysma muscle. Practice relaxing it, not strengthening it! You’ll thank me in 20 years!
