As the sunny hours are decreasing along with the temperatures, many patients find their skin disorders flaring up. As much as dermatologists sometimes hate to admit it, sunlight does help many skin disorders. Thankfully it doesn’t take much outdoor light – often less than 20 minutes a few times a week. But for those who respond well to UV light, fall and winter can be a difficult time for their skin disease. We have a solution!
Have you ever hung out with a dermatologist? We’re the ones applying sunscreen every few hours, nagging our families, and wearing hats and long-sleeves in the middle of summer. After removing and treating skin cancers every day, dermatologists develop a healthy respect for the sun and its UV rays. So, patients are often surprised to find that I have two “tanning bed” like devices in my office. As much as dermatologists hate to admit it sometimes, the sun and UV rays are not all bad.
At the office we offer UV light treatments with UVA and NBUVB in a booth and Excimer (XTRAC) laser. While we primarily use these treatments for psoriasis and vitiligo, they can be used to treat some other skin disorders as well. We have two light booths available in the office, and one includes UVA light as well. These treatments are most often utilized in the fall and winter months, but many patients prefer the painless efficacy and simplicity of these treatments year-round.
For most light treatments it takes about 25 treatments to achieve significant clearance, coming to the office twice a week. After achieving clearance, many patients will come once a week for maintenance and more often if a flare recurs. The negative of this treatment option is that it is a little time consuming to come to the office for treatments, but we try to minimize your time waiting as much as possible by having two light booths and two laser technicians.
Many patients wonder if they continue current treatments while doing light treatments. In most cases, we just add light to start and wean other treatments as the skin clears.
So, if the winter blues have your skin flaring as well, let us know and we can try to help! Insurance coverage for these procedures is good overall, but we can help you figure that out as well.
