I frequently am asked for tips for patients as they age. When considering caring for the skin, hair and nails, each decade just requires more. Often when I discuss good skin care habits with patients, they will ask. “Do I have to do this everyday forever?” My answer is always, YES! There are lots of things we do each day to maintain our health and wellness. If you want to keep your teeth pearly white and cavity free, you need to brush your teeth daily. For many of these things you get rewarded for your good behavior as the years go by just like good teeth.
Once reaching the 60s, I find patient’s concerns about aging diverge. Some are clawing on for dear life and many others just want to target a specific concern like brown spots or milia. For most of us, as we age, our expectations of health and beauty mature along with our bodies. The 60s and beyond are often a time for focusing on skin health and coming to the realization that beauty takes on a different face as we age.
If you missed my article on skin care tips for earlier decades, I’ll go over those again, because if you haven’t started a skin care routine yet, this is a great place to start!
Tips for the 30s…

Additional tips for the 40s…

Adding on a few for the 50s…

Now for the 60s and beyond.
As we enter these decades of life. I find my patients more focused on the health of their skin. Often choosing to treat the things that really bother them versus trying to find the fountain of youth.
Tip#11 Focus on the low hanging fruit. This is the time to knock out some of those easy, inexpensive things that can easily be treated. From pesky skin tags and seborrheic keratoses, to milium and cherry angiomas, we get more of all of these things with age. If these are in visible and bothersome areas, treatment to remove some of these benign growths is easy and inexpensive.
Tip#12 Skin checks for early detection of skin cancer. While skin cancers can occur as early as our 20s, skin cancer risk increases with age. So the 60s should include a yearly skin cancer surveillance exam. With other skin conditions occurring with advancing age as well, yearly visits allow us to keep your skin at its best.
Tip#13 Consider some changes to our skin care regimen. When women over 60 ask about starting a new skin care regimen, this is the time that I often recommend a different line of products called Defenage. These products contain defensins, which are the molecules that stimulate the body to release new healthy stem cells. I often liken this to rejuvenating an old lawn by laying down sod, instead of feeding the old grass and weeds. Defenage products offer a simple yet effective regimen for those of advancing age.
