I frequently am asked for tips for patients in their 30s, 40s and beyond. When considering caring for the skin, hair and nails, each decade just requires more. Often when I discuss good skin care habits with patients, they will ask. “Do I have to do this everyday forever?” My answer is always, YES! There are lots of things we do each day to maintain our health and wellness. If you want to keep your teeth pearly white and cavity free, you need to brush your teeth daily. For many of these things you get rewarded for your good behavior as the years go by just like good teeth.
If you missed my article on skin care tips for your 30s and 40s, I’ll go over those again, because if you haven’t started a skin care routine yet, this is a great place to start!
Tips for the 30s…
Tip#1. A sunscreen with zinc oxide every day on your face and neck.
Tip#2. A daily multivitamin.
Tip#3 RetinA applied every night to the face.
Tip#4 Topical with DNA repair enzymes
Tip#5 BOTOX for any lines at rest
Additional tips for the 40s…
Tip#6 Gray be gone!
Tip#7 Filler for Volume loss.
Tip#8 Start a separate “Skin, Hair & Nails” vitamin.
Moving on to the 50s where I now squarely reside…
Hair becomes a bigger issue, and not just on your head. I feel like the 50s are prime space for focusing on hair growth and hair removal.
Tip#9 Get those hairs jumpstarted. Rogaine for the scalp and eyebrows and Latisse for eyelashes and eyebrows.
Hair loss starts accelerating for women in our 50s. For men, it can start as early as 20s or 30s, but women join in the fun in their 50s. If you have read any of my posts, or have talked to me in the office, I’m a big fan of topical Rogaine, and I use it myself. In my opinion, backed by science, it is the safest and most effective single treatment for hair growth stimulation. Many patients ask if they have to use it forever. If the hair loss is hormonal and age related, the answer is likely YES. But just like brushing those teeth, what’s a good head of hair worth to you? For me, using Rogaine is a simple no brainer.
But, its not just hair on the scalp that starts thinning. It’s also our eyebrows and eyelashes, also more of an issue for women. Topical Latisse, now available in generic form bimatoprost, is a simple and very effective product to stimulate eyelash growth. It can also be applied on the eyebrows. Generally, the lateral third of the eyebrows thin first, so make sure to cover the entire length of the eyebrows. In addition to Latisse, Rogaine can be used on the eyebrows, but not the eyelashes. Tip#10 Watch for and remove unwanted hair. For men, this is hairs in the ears. For women this is chin whiskers and peach fuzz on the cheeks. Why can’t hair just grow where it is supposed to grow? While laser hair removal works for thick, dark hairs, it does not work for gray white or fine hairs. For those, I usually recommend a depilatory cream, Surgicream is a inexpensive and effective choice. Dermaplaning is effective for cheek peach fuzz but should be done with extreme caution.
