Sadly, my 40s are in the rear-view mirror, but I frequently am asked for tips for patients in their 30s, 40s and beyond. When considering caring for the skin, hair and nails, each decade just requires more. Often when I discuss good skin care habits with patients, they will ask. “Do I have to do this everyday forever?” My answer is always, YES! There are lots of things we do each day to maintain our health and wellness. If you want to keep your teeth pearly white and cavity free, you need to brush your teeth daily. For many of these things you get rewarded for your good behavior as the years go by just like good teeth.
If you missed my article on skin care tips for your 30s, I’ll go over those again, because if you haven’t started a skin care routine yet, this is a great place to start. Many of my tips are similar for the 40s, so just in case you missed it.
Tip#1. A sunscreen with zinc oxide every day on your face and neck.
Tip#2. A daily multivitamin.
Tip#3 RetinA applied every night to the face.
Tip#4 Topical with DNA repair enzymes
Tip#5 BOTOX for any lines at rest
Additional tips for the 40s…
Tip#6 Gray be gone! The 40s are time to start paying attention to those premature gray hairs. Now, I realize that gray hair is a little trendy for women. But, for those wanting to invest in a more youthful appearance, gray be gone! This is my opinion and a controversial one I know, but gray hair ages from 50 feet away. The judgement on youthfulness and health is made long before anyone gets close enough to see fine lines.
Tip#7 Filler for Volume loss. As early as the 40s, women more so than men, start to develop more grooves in their face. Starting with smile lines and progressing from there. These lines and crevices are from volume loss and can’t be replaced with any cream or even BOTOX. There are lots of options for fillers now, but most contain hyaluronic acid. In the office we most often use Juvederm, Restylane and Sculptra.
Tip#8 Start a separate “Skin, Hair & Nails” vitamin. These mainly contain Biotin and minerals. It’s a simple inexpensive way of nourishing our bodies. As life gets busier our diet can suffer and extra vitamins fill in the gap.
So that’s it! Turns out the 40s aren’t so bad. I miss them! If you’re missing them too, check out our upcoming articles for 50s, 60s and beyond.
