We’ve all heard the old adage of needing our “beauty sleep”, but how much scientific evidence is there for this saying?
Here’s what we know… God created sleep and rest for our bodies to rejuvenate. But what impact does it have on the skin?
Here’s what common sense and media tells us:
-Well-rested people overall appear more attractive. From the sparkle in our eyes to the lack of puffiness under our eyes, rest improves our overall attractiveness.
-Sleep position can affect wrinkles. Side sleepers beware! From creases on our chest to our face, side sleeping crunches your skin all night ingraining lines for 8 hours of day. Can’t afford BOTOX, switch to sleeping on your back.
What science tells us:
-Blood flow to the skin increases when we sleep, aiding in skin repair.
-Sleep and rest give the skin a chance to recover and repair from the events of the day. Collagen building occurs while we sleep, and we get rest from UV and blue light exposure.
-Lack of sleep increase stress hormones which negatively impact a number of skin disorders including psoriasis, eczema, chronic itching and acne.
-Sleep restriction has been shown in small scientific studies to decrease healthy moisture in the skin, increase oil production, and decrease collagen and elastin.
What you can do:
-Pay attention to circadium rhythm. Keep your sleep and wake times consistent to improve your sleep quality. Aim for 7-8 hours a night.
-Have a “wind down” routine at night. Dim the lights. Put away screens, and treat your skin to a nighttime skin routine. A good nighttime skin routine should include washing the face at bare minimum. Applying a retinoid and moisturizer is an added bonus.
-Sleep on your back. This habit is great for reducing wrinkles!
-Use a silk pillowcase for an extra pampering and gentleness to your skin.
How about you? What how is your sleep routine, is it helping or hurting your skin?
