If you hang out with me in the office, you might get bored hearing me give the same advice over and over again. Truth is, basic skin care is very simple. So here are the things I recommend people stop doing every day.
NUMBER ONE: DON’T PICK. Picking the skin is never a good idea. From pimples to bug bites and warts, picking is never a good idea. Generally, our hands are not clean. Picking introduces bacteria that causes infection. Even more importantly, the more you pick at something the longer it takes to heal and the more likely it is to leave a permanent scar or discoloration. Most of us learn this the hard way at some point in our lives, but for many picking is a habit that still needs broken.
NUMBER TWO: NO PURPOSEFUL TANNING. Tanning beds are 100% no. Real scientific data shows that tanning beds increase melanoma and other skin cancer risk even if you only have used a tanning bed ONCE. I love the outdoors. So, I encourage patients to live and enjoy their life, but protect as much as possible. Definitely, do not try to get a tan on purpose. In addition to skin cancer, it accelerates aging of the skin, and no one wants to look old.
NUMBER THREE: STOP BELIEVING EVERYTHING YOU SEE AND HEAR. There are lots of people who want to sell you something. With AI, you can’t believe anything you see, including videos now. Remember social media is targeting YOU. Take advice from professionals and people you actually know in person.
NUMBER FOUR: STOP OVERUSING PRODUCTS. This goes along with number three. Marketing has us believing that skin care is much more complex and expensive than it needs to be. Keep it simple. Daily sunscreen and RetinA use should be at the center of every skin care regimen. If you need help with a basic skin care regimen, ask us at your yearly appointment. We’d be happy to give you some tips.
On the flip side, what skin care habits should you adopt in 2026? A yearly skin exam, home self exams and daily sunscreen use are at the top of that list. Follow us on social media to learn more!
