Other than the basic tips we always have as dermatologists, this year’s biggest concern is reality. What is real and what is not?
As a person who loves travel, I used to see a picture and put that place on my bucket list. Unfortunately, a picture is no longer trusted. I often see pictures of places I have actually been and realize… it doesn’t look like that. Then, for awhile, I trusted videos more. But AI has changed that as well.
Nothing is as it seems.
This is a real problem in skin care and hair care. Before and after pictures are pretty worthless these days. Everything has been altered to meet big expectations.
It will be interesting overall to see how this progresses in so many arenas.
Will digital art, that can be created by a computer independent of any human skill or creativity continue to hold value? Or will we resort back to valuing hand drawn and hand painted pieces of art?
Will we continue to take what we read on the internet, especially the AI generated summaries, as fact, or will we resort back to books and finding the original article to summarize it for ourselves?
These are questions that I have been contemplating.
For skin care, my professional opinion on skin care products has become one in a billion with tons of “experts” easily available. No need to ask a dermatologist. There are millions of people online, particularly on social media, praising products and services to our demise.
Will 2026 be the year of “word of mouth”? True word of mouth. Friend to friend, neighbor to neighbor. Will we ask real people that we actually know about things? I don’t know. But I sure hope so.
My tip for 2026 is “If it sounds (or looks) too good to be true, it probably is!” When spending large amounts of money on skin care. Ask first?
-Does this company have a track record of products with proven efficacy?
-Does this product have real, non-biased, scientific evidence published in real scientific journals?
-Is the person making this recommendation being paid to sell me this particular product?
-Does the person making this recommendation have a track record of making safe, solid, effective and affordable recommendations?
One thing is for sure. Times they are a changing. It’s gonna be an interesting ride.
