What’s the difference?
By now you probably have heard of Coolsculpting. We have offered the technology in our office for a few years. You probably have encountered the brand on social media, television, and more. But what is Cooltone? How do they differ? And are you interested in either as summer approaches?
What is Coolsculpting? Coolsculpting is a procedure that freezes treated areas of excess fat to kill fat cells and reduce the appearance of unwanted fat. Coolsculpting is one of those cases of accidental discovery, like penicillin, and so many other great discoveries. In the medical literature, cases of cold-induced fat loss have been reported since 1902. Too bad it took over 100 years for scientists to figure out how to harness the power of cold to reduce excess fat. Coolsculpting was approved by the FDA in 2010 and in the past 10 years over 8 million treatments have been done. Fat is selectively frozen and treated in this procedure. Dr. Rosenberger is always cautious when adopting new technologies, so we waited until 2017 to begin Coolsculpting at Appalachian Spring Dermatology. We have lots of happy patients!
What is Cooltone? Cooltone is another device marketed by the same company as Coolsculpting. It was FDA improved more recently in 2019. Cooltone targets muscle instead of fat. It is FDA improved for strengthening, toning, and firming of muscles in the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. Although the word “cool” is in the name, there is no cold in this technology. Instead, Cooltone uses Magnetic Muscle Stimulation to strengthen muscles. This technology selectively targets muscles. Apparently, muscle is a good transmitter of the magnetic field and the procedure induces muscle contractions to strengthen. We do not currently do Cooltone in the office, but Dr. Rosenberger is evaluating other similar technologies for the future. The first of the muscle-strengthening technologies was EMscuplt. That company has a new device that simultaneously targets muscle and fat called EMsculptNEO so we will keep you posted on that.
Other than treating different things, any other major differences? Yes, Coolsculpting is permanent. It permanently destroys fat cells. A person may still desire subsequent treatments to see an even better result, but unless there is significant weight gain, the loss is permanent. Cooltone only temporarily stimulates and strengthens muscles, just like working out. So, maintenance is required and quarterly treatments are recommended after initial results are obtained.
We have seen great results from a lot of our Coolsculpting patients. The best results are in those who also adopt healthy eating and exercise to maintain their weight.
If you would like to schedule a free consultation, you can book one online or call the office.
