A friend of mine is turning 30 this year. Oh to be 30 again! He asked me to give some skin care advice for his 30s. In actuality, the 30s are a good time to start taking skin care seriously. As many of my patients know, I like to make simple recommendations that can be carried on into later decades. As we age, we should build and add on to this list. So, this is also a good list for anyone who is just getting started caring for their skin, care and nails.
Tip#1- Start wearing sunscreen daily. Face AND neck. How I wish I could go back to my 30s and take better care of my neck. Sunscreen should always contain either zinc oxide or titanium oxide to be the most safe and effective. This is a non-negotiable for long term beautiful/handsome and healthy skin.
Tip#2- Start taking a multivitamin daily. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy. Young adulthood is a busy time of life, and nutrition often suffers. A daily multivitamin ensures that we get the essentials vitamins and minerals needed for healthy skin, hair and nails. No serums necessary yet, just simple good nutrition.
Tip#3 Start using RetinA. Many teens use RetinA or one of its forms for acne, but as they enter their 20s and acne gets better, they get lazy. I encourage my patients to never stop using their RetinA. It’s a no brainer for maintaining the health and appearance of the skin. Pore size, fine lines, wrinkles, skin texture and tone all targeted in one product at an affordable price. It should be used nightly for best efficacy. This one is for FACE ONLY. It is too irritating on the neck. If these products are too irritating, start with a mild strength a few nights a week and advance as tolerated. You’ll thank me years from now.
Tip#4. Use a product with DNA Repair Enzymes. This recommendation is not on most people’s radar screens, but I started in my 30s and I continue using one to this day. These products are designed to rapidly repair skin DNA that has been damaged by the elements. Damaged DNA is the first step in skin cancer development, so fixing it is crucial. Again, I would recommend face and neck and wish I could go back and do it all over again. Examples of these products available in the Spring Boutique are ZO Daily Power Defense, Skin Better Alto Defense and Repair, and ISDIN Sunscreen which combines Tip#2 and Tip#4 in one easy step.
Tip#5. Start some BOTOX. I realize this one may be a little controversial and more expensive than my other recommendations. When is it time to start BOTOX? While that can vary from person to person, the simple answer is… When there are facial lines at rest. Meaning, when not making any expressions, lines can be seen. Usually this is first seen in the forehead and glabellar frown lines. However, with lifelong water bottle use, the area around the lips and mouth are becoming problems earlier in life. Lines at rest can start as early as the teens and 20s, so the 30s is NOT too early.
So, there you go my friend! Enjoy those 30s! Don’t let the chaos of life crowd the joy of your full head of hair and joints that move with ease. Skin care is the easy part! Enjoy the ride!
If your 30s have passed you by, stay tune for my articles on the 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond. But here’s a preview, as the decades progress we will just add on to this list. So no matter your age, get started with the above and you’ll thank me years from now.
