Top 5 Men’s Skin Care Tips

In honor of Father’s Day, I thought I’d chime in with some skin care tips for your favorite dad.  If you’re feeling really ambitious, put together a skin care kit using the tips below Either way, these tips should help keep men looking good and cancer free.

1-Wash your Face– While this may seem elementary.  It’s not.  Men often don’t wash like women do, and if they do, it’s with whatever they find in the shower.  Most men have oilier skin than women, so a woman’s cleanser might not be a great option either.  Here’s some suggestions that also provide oil control… Cetaphil Oil Control Wash, Cerave Foaming Facial Cleanser, ZO Exfoliating Cleanser.  As many of my patients know, I am a fan of prescription sulfur wash as well because it works for acne, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis.  For those with more advanced seborrheic dermatitis aka dandruff in their beard, I recommend washing the beard with dandruff shampoo a few times a week.   To learn more about washing your face, see our article below.

2-Use Sunscreen Everyday – Every day?  Yes, every day.  I hear lots of complaints from men about sunscreen.  Many don’t like that it makes their skin feel oily or greasy.  Others complain about it running and stinging theie eyes.  Here are some common sunscreens I recommend for men.  In the Spring Boutique, I often recommend ISDIN Sunscreen which comes both clear and tinted.  Many men actually find they like the tinted version because they look less pasty.  ISDIN Sunscreen is unique because it also contains anti-aging DNA repair enzymes that reduce the incidence of skin cancer.  For those that complain of it running into their eyes, I often recommend a zinc or titanium stick sunscreen.  Stick sunscreens are small and can conveniently be tucked into a pocket or golf bag.  Examples containing only Zinc and Titanium include… Neutrogena’s Pure & Free Baby Sunscreen Stick, Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Mineral stick, Babyganics pure mineral sunscreen stick, Coppertone Pure and Simple Stick and Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Sunscreen Stick.  All are available at Walmart.  In the Spring Boutique Skin Better Science Stick and Colorescience Sport Stick SPF 50.  Sprays are convenient for ears, scalp and back of the neck, but remember to pick one with zinc and titanium only.  To get a full listing of Dr Rosenberger’s sunscreen picks, see our article below.

3-Take a Vitamin-Despite my best lecturing, some still refuse to use sunscreen.  So, I recommend Heliocare vitamins.  These vitamins include a fern extract that greatly reduce sensitivity to the sun.  While this is NOT a substitute for sunscreen for most, it is “way better than nothing”.  Great for fishermen, golfers, hikers, boaters.  You name it.  In our family, we all take it if we are planning a day outdoors.  It also provides a lot of grace if you forget to apply sunscreen in an area.   To learn more about Fern Extracts, see our article below.

4-Wear a Hat and Protective Clothing- If you’ve ever seen me at the pool or working in the yard, you know I take this one seriously.  I’m a fan of Coolibar clothing.  (www.coolibar.com) and many will agree the best sun hats on the market are Tilley hats (www.tilley.com).  Lately, many companies have joined in the arena of sun protective clothing, brands like Huk are actually cool now.  (www.hukgear.com).  These clothes and hats are an investment, but your skin is worth it!  Many of my Coolibar shirts have had 100s of wears and washing through beach, pool, hikes, bikes and more and they still look good.

5- Use a RetinoidRetinA and it’s derivatives are Vitamin A creams and gels that help the skin grow in a more health way and reduce acne.  Oh, and they are the number one anti-aging ingredient in skin care.   They often can be a little drying, but for oily skin, that’s not as much of a problem for men.  A great starter retinoid is Differin Gel available OTC.  More advanced and potent products available in the Spring Boutique include ZO Retinol Skin Brightener and Skin Better Science AlphaRet Overnight Cream.

Hope these types are helpful.  Many of my readers are women, so you can forward this to your man.  Or, put him together a skin care gift set.  He’ll thank you some day!
