Some Vitamin C Can Break Down Elastin – Don’t be saggy choose a good one!
One of the things I am always on the look out for is new and improved products for the Spring Boutique (and myself). While there is always something new, I’m looking for the groundbreaking products that are a game changer. Wow, do we have a great new one for you!
When choosing new products for the Boutique, Dr Rosenberger looks for things that are new, things that are an improvement on products that we currently offer, and things that do not compete and confuse patients on what to choose. For instance, we don’t sell ten eye creams – we sell one or two that are the best. By best, I mean real scientific proof with impressive results that they really work.
Introducing Alastin Vitamin C Radical Defense Antioxidant Serum!
We have carried a few select products from Alastin in the Spring Boutique for years. They are best know for their TriHex Technology which removes, rebuilds and replenishes collagen and elastin. The TriHex technology is in some, but not all of their products. We like the Alastin Body for crepey skin and post Coolsculpting and the Inhance Post Injection serum for post procedure bruising. Dr Rosenberger has also been trying the Alastin Retinol and Hydratint Sunscreen.
When Alastin introduced their Vitamin C, they immediately caught my attention with “a new Vitamin C molecule that does not degrade elastin”. Vitamin C degrade elastin? What are they talking about?
Turns out, the science showing Vitamin C playing an important role in building collagen is very solid, but elastin is a different story. This is where good science and great scientists are important in product development.
The scientists at Alastin dug up an often overlooked study from 2014 that showed that the traditional L-ascorbic acid form of Vitamin C caused degradation of elastin. However, this elastin degradation was not seen with the Sodium L-ascorbate form of Vitamin C.
Why is this important? Elastin is the molecule that gives our skin stretch, bounce and snap. The last thing we want to do is degrade it!
Prior to the release of this product last month, we only carried one antioxidant based product in the office. Skin Bettter Sciences Alto Defense and Repair contains Vitamin C, E and 17 addition antioxidants plus DNA repair enzymes. Dr. Rosenberger chose this one because in scientific studies it out performs all other antioxidant and Vitamin C serums. So, now what? The Defense and Repair is still a great product, but for those who are looking for a straight Vitamin C serum, Alastin Vitamin C seems to be the new winner. We will continue to carry both, because we love the repair portion of the Defense and Repair which is also found in the ZO Daily Power Defense.
Vitamin C serums are fraught with problems. First, the delivery mechanism and packaging needs to be just right to avoid the product oxidizing and degrading before it reaches its target. Second, because L-ascorbic acid is an ACID, it is very irritating to a lot of patients, particularly those with sensitive skin or rosacea.
Alastin Vitamin C serum is less irritating than traditional vitamin C and equally effective. It contains not only Vitamin C, but also 14 other antioxidants that work together to neutralize free radicals, protect against UV damage, stimulate collagen production and conserve elastin. This all leads to brighter skin with improved texture, decreased fine line and other signs of aging. I don’t usually write articles about the Spring Boutique or new products, but I thought this one was so radically different that it deserved an article of its own.
