As we all know, you can’t believe or follow every skin care tip you see on social media. However, slugging is one of the less worrisome tips that has quite a big following. What is it? Slugging is a term developed by social media and influencers to describe a beauty treatment to improve the moisturization and glow of your skin.

How do you do it? In general, most recipes or regimens for slugging involve applying a thick layer of Vaseline petroleum jelly to the skin overnight.
Isn’t that messy? Yep! It’s very messy. It requires protecting your pillowcase, sheets and hair from getting messy with Vaseline.
What’s the point? Slugging with Vaseline is done to lock moisture in. Some proponents apply a moisturizer or serum prior to applying the Vaseline to get the first ingredient to penetrate better. Those who swear by it say it gives their skin a healthy glow.
What’s the negative? Vaseline can be very comedogenic, meaning that it clogs pores. Slugging is not recommended for those with acne, milia or lots of clogged pores. Also that moist environment can provide a fertile ground for bacteria, yeast and fungus to grow if it’s not already present.
Does Dr Rosenberger recommend it or do it? No. First, of all, I struggle with clogged pores on my chin from wearing a mask in the office and I don’t want to make the acne worse. Second, I don’t like anything that interferes with a good night sleep. Third, there’s lots easier ways to moisturize the skin. Slugging just isn’t for me.
