New Skincare Line Now Available in the Spring Boutique

If you’ve stopped by the Spring Boutique recently, you will notice we have a new skincare line. I’m excited to introduce you to skinbetter Science. As a dermatologist, I am offered lots of skincare products to try, but few make it into the Spring Boutique. Why this one?

First of all, the founder of the company has a long-standing reputation for developing and providing excellent quality products with strong scientific proven efficacy. Probably the product name you would recognize most is Restylane, the first of the hyaluronic acid fillers that revolutionized the filler industry. Just goes to show that a reputation for excellence at least gets you in the door in life.

Second, the science behind the products is great. Unlike many products with very little scientific proof, these products come with a large number of real scientific studies proving their safety, tolerability, and efficacy. With an MD and a Ph.D. background and degree, real science matters to me and impresses me.

Finally, and most importantly, I tried them and they worked! My skin is VERY sensitive and I have rosacea. Therefore, it is rare for products to not irritate me no matter how “gentle” they claim to be.

Did I mention they’re free. Fragrance free, paraben free, dye free and cruelty free. They are not inexpensive, but all great things come with a price.

If you are happy with your current skincare regimen, there is no need to change right away. But, if you are running out of things, stop by and we will help you restock with some of the newer items from skinbetter Science and another new skincare line in the office, Defenage. So, what should you try?

Two products by skinbetter really attracted me. Alto Defense Serum and AlphaRet Overnight Cream.

AlphaRet Overnight Cream – Many patients understand the scientific benefit of using RetinA, but many cannot or will not tolerate the redness and peeling associated with the first 8-12 weeks of use. AlphaRet includes a potent retinol that binds differently in the skin leading to supreme efficacy with no irritation. It is combined with an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), called lactic acid, which also helps gently exfoliate the skin to avoid peeling. It also includes a number of antioxidants as a “one and done” nighttime product. It comes in a few different formulations. The retinol portion is the same in all of them. The “Intensive” version has more lactic acid for more exfoliation and the “Clearing” version for acne-prone skin.

Alto Defense Serum – This “one and done” daytime product has unparalleled scientifically proven antioxidant properties, surpassing what traditionally was the gold standard of antioxidant serums and creams. Alto Defense Serum combines Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and 17 additional antioxidants to improve skin texture, redness and reduce free-radical damage. If you are looking for an antioxidant topical to add to your skincare regimen, you can’t beat this one. It feels light on the skin and is not irritating.

If you are looking for a simple yet robust “bare-bones” regimen I like the ZO Gentle Cleanser twice a day, paired with Alto Defense in the morning followed by sunscreen and AlphaRet at night. Simple and easy.

The more of their skincare products I try, the more I like. Because of my rosacea, my tolerance for prescription-strength hydroquinone bleaching cream is very limited. It’s summer, so I’m trying to keep my freckles in hiding with the Even Tone Correcting Serum.

My girls, now 9 and 11, love anything that resembles makeup. So, they love the sunbetter TONE SMART SPF 68 Sunscreen Compact. I’m generally not a fan of “tone smart” technology, but this looks nice on most skin types I’ve tested it on so far. It blends nicely, doesn’t feel heavy, is non-comedogenic, and has 80-minute water resistance. There is a SHEER SPF 56 compact and stick as well that is as close to “clear” as zinc sunscreen gets.

I know many find this hard to believe, but it isn’t always fun to test new skincare products. These were a joy, and thus now find a coveted place in our Spring Boutique. Come and check them out for yourself.
