In September 2022 a new BOTOX competitor was FDA approved for cosmetic use. We wanted to take a few minutes to update our patients on this exciting advancement.
For those of you who may not be BOTOX aficionados, BOTOX is an injectable that is used cosmetically to treat unwanted facial lines. It is widely used in other areas of medicine as well. BOTOX works by preventing unwanted or unnecessary movement of muscles. Once injected BOTOX works at the neuromuscular junction to reduce muscular activity and relaxes muscles for 3-4 months.
While I have been using the brand name “BOTOX” thus far in this article, there are a few other commercially available botulinum toxins. Other brands of botulinum toxin include Jeuveau, Xeomin and Dysport. At our office we use all but Dysport. Xeomin was FDA approved for cosmetic use in 2011 and Jeuveau in 2019. In my experience patients have been reluctant to try the newer products. BOTOX, FDA approved in 2002, has been the market leader for many years. Why? Brand name recognition. I always use the following example when talking to patients. “No one ever says, can you get me a CURAD? They ask for a BANDAID.” Same with BOTOX.
With the previous competitors there was little impetus to change. While scientifically Xeomin and Jeuveau are more refined botulinum toxin molecules, clinically there is little difference between the three. In fact, they can be used interchangeably and dosed exactly the same. We keep all three in stock in case someone wants to try a different one. A few patients have developed a preference, but most do not see a noticeable difference. When Dr Rosenberger treats herself and her staff, we use whichever one we have the most of that day.
But Daxxify might change things.
Why? Daxxify is reported to last longer than the previous botulinum toxins. For BOTOX regulars, it requires injection every 3-4 months to maintain a result for 95% of people. In preliminary studies with Daxxify, 50% of patients maintained their result at 6 months and some up to 9 months. How well this toxin will work for everyday use remains to be seen.
Should I plan on switching? As always, Dr Rosenberger will try it out on herself to be the first “guinea pig”. Patients who are experienced with getting BOTOX injections might want to consider the longer active product just out of ease of scheduling less appointments per year.
How much will it cost? At this point, no pricing is available for Daxxify and it is not available for purchase yet, so we don’t know.
So, there’s the exciting news! We will keep our patients updated as more details become available. If you want to learn more about BOTOX and see Dr Rosenberger in action, check out the articles below and our You Tube page.
