At Appalachian Spring Dermatology, we started Coolsculpting in the spring, and our results are rolling in! We are excited to share some of our before and after photos throughout the week. I will even share some of my own!

I also wanted to highlight the most common questions I receive:

Does it work?
Yes, it really does. It is backed by science and has a track record of continued success with over 7 million treatments done in the US.

Is it for someone like me?
Possibly yes! We all have that stubborn area that bothers us: saggy arms, love handles, double chin, thunder thighs, you name it! Coolsculpting works best for that stubborn area of fat that never goes away with diet and exercise. Coolsculpting is a chance to “spot reduce” that stubborn area!

Am I too old?
No, we can treat all ages. We have treated quite a few patients in their 70s. The only caveat is that older skin does not snap back as well and the skin may look loose or lax.

Can you get rid of (fill -in-the-blank-area)?
If you can pinch it, we can probably treat it. The best way to find out is to have a consult. Recently, I attended Coolsculpting University. They made a funny analogy that applies: “Coming up with a Coolsculpting treatment plan and price is very customized like kitchen cabinets.” It depends on the patient’s wants, desire, and goals.

Is it permanent?
Yes, each treatment or cycle gets rid of about 25% of the fat cells in a given area. The more fat you have, the more treatment cycles it takes to get a good result. Once we obtain the desired effect, it is maintained as long as there is not a significant fluctuation in weight.

Does it hurt?
Not really; it stings a little for the first five minutes of the treatment. After that, the area is numb. I have had a lot of treatment cycles. I have fallen asleep almost every time. Sometimes the area is tender for a few days after treatment. Tenderness is more noticeable on the lower abdomen than other areas.

Will it make me skinny?
Probably not. Coolsculpting works for pinchable bulges of fat. It will not remove our visceral fat that is inside our abdominal cavity. We have seen some great results when Coolsculpting propels people to revamp their diet and exercise program, lose weight, and improve their overall health. Coolsculpting is just one piece of the puzzle. True change begins within.
