Can you believe it? 2022. I am one of the nerdy people that love a new year, goal setting, making plans and hoping to see them through. I’m here to give you a few easy suggestions to jumpstart your skin for 2022.
Mild Soap- Use a mild soap in the shower. Cetaphil Bar Soap (either kind) is my favorite. Cerave and Vanicream also make a nice bar.
Shower as long as you like, with whatever temperature you like- Many old-fashioned dermatologists would tell patients to only take short, lukewarm showers every few days. The belief was that the hot water would cause “oils” to be released from the skin and be washed off. We now know that the skin barrier is much, much more complex than this. There’s nothing that relaxes me like a long hot shower. So, shower away, as long as you moisturize afterward.
Moisturize after showering – Many scientific studies have shown that moisturizers and other topicals are best absorbed when the skin is warm and wet. So, apply moisturizer right out of the shower if possible. Good choices are Cetaphil Cream and Cerave Cream. I often also recommend Eucerin Roughness Relief Lotion for those with lots of dead, dry skin. And for those who tend to be itchy, Cerave Itch Relief Cream or Lotion.
Apply Sunscreen to Exposed Areas Every Day – Every Day? Yes. All-year-round. I put on a zinc-based sunscreen every day- rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, summer or winter. Every Day. I prefer Colorescience Tint Du Soleil as a one-stop moisturizing, tinted sunscreen. For men, I recommend ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica for its light feel and DNA repair enzymes. It comes tinted and untinted.
Apply a Retinoid to the Face Every Night-Retinoids are medications in the family of RetinA. They are excellent for acne, rosacea, and anti-aging. They can range in potency and often the more potent the more irritating so start low and slow. Differin Gel OTC is a great place to start. My current favorite that I’m using is ZO Skin Health Retinol Skin Brightener and Skin Better Science AlphaRet is a great medium strength with minimal irritation.
Hope you put these tips to good use. They’ll keep your skin in great health for 2022 and beyond!
