3 Tips for Choosing Makeup for Acne Prone Skin
Everywhere I turn it seems there is an ad for makeup. Social media is full of beautiful people demonstrating and selling their makeup. It’s all so very alluring. Before you make that impulse purchase, here’s a dermatologist’s checklist when evaluating which makeup to purchase.
Non-comedogenic or Doesn’t Clog Pores. This is very important for anything you put on and leave on your face (the exception is mascara). Many products are comedogenic. If they aren’t labeled as non-comedogenic, they didn’t pass the test. You should find this either on the label or the packaging. Oil free is fine, but it is NOT the same as non-comedogenic. Cement is oil free, but it will still clog your pores.
Sunscreen with Zinc or Titanium. If possible, it’s good to have sunscreen built into your makeup. This way you’re ready to go all day. However, make sure that you check the sunscreen active ingredients. For longer lasting and more thorough coverage. If you are depending on your make up for sunscreen, please also check the water resistance. To learn more about what to look for in sunscreen, check out our articles below.
Other Active Ingredients. Many creams advertised as “BB creams” and “CC creams” have lots of unproven claims and little scientific evidence of their efficacy. When looking for active ingredients for acne prone skin, I recommend looking for a foundation with salicylic acid to help treat the active acne as well. Salicylic acid is not a powerful acne fighting ingredient, but its anti-inflammatory action can help sooth active acne.
Three simple things on our checklist, but turns out that’s not as easy as you might think. Patients often ask me what I recommend. For this reason we do carry a few lines in the Spring Boutique to meet these needs. For a foundation for acne prone skin, I recommend Oxygenetix. Oxygenetix meets all the requirements above, plus has a wound healing matrix. For other, lip, face and eye products, I often recommend Colorescience products. All of these are available in our Spring Boutique.
